Chapter Nine

Abby had a few free minutes Thursday morning—a minor miracle these days. She jotted down the notes from her last patient and tossed the folder in the out basket. Leaning back against her chair, she rubbed her forehead. The nagging tension that had been present since last night wasn’t going away. How could a simple dinner with a friend have produced such turmoil?

She wanted to know why Elise had stopped by last night. And why she’d dashed away so quickly. Abby called Pam’s boutique, but Pam wasn’t in and the salesclerk refused to give out Elise’s phone number.

Which was prudent, she knew, but aggravating when she wanted it. Who knew when she’d have another lull? Reluctantly she dialed Greg’s extension.

Rose answered.

When she heard Abby’s request, she hesitated. “I don’t know, I’d have to check with Greg first,” she said.

“Never mind,” Abby said quickly. “I’ll call her from home tonight. It’s just that I had a few minutes free. Thanks anyway.” She hung up before Rose could suggest waiting while she asked Greg.

She’d take her few minutes and go get a cup of coffee, then plunge back into her appointments.

When Abby returned to her office ten minutes later, she almost spilled her coffee when she saw Greg lounging against the side of her desk, leafing through one of the medical journals she kept meaning to read.

He looked up when she stopped, his eyes narrowing.

“Rose said you wanted Elise’s number.”

Abby took a deep breath, wondering how she could go from calm, focused physician one minute to fluttering feminine awareness and desire the next.

Desire?

Squashing any thoughts along those lines, she took a deep breath and nodded, stepping into her office. She rounded the desk and sat down quickly before her knees gave way.

“I had some time between appointments and thought I’d call her. We, er, didn’t get to visit that much last night.”

“I guess not, with her crashing your date.”

The odd note in his voice made her curious. She looked up. “It wasn’t precisely a date, we just went to dinner together.”

“Next you’ll tell me you two are just good friends.”

There was something odd about his tone. She couldn’t place it, however. Slowly she shrugged.

“I don’t know if I’d call us good friends. We do work together.”

“Dating a fellow physician could be dangerous.”

Dating Greg Hastings could be dangerous. Seeing Mike Adams was a walk in the park.

She sipped her coffee, more for something to do than that she still wanted it. Her peaceful break had ended.

“Do we scratch our plan?” Greg asked, leaning forward enough that Abby felt as if the air had been sucked out of the room. She tried to inch away without appearing obvious, but she was afraid he knew her every thought.

“Plan?”

“To find you a date for the hospital ball. Has Mike asked you?”

She stiffened. “I’ve told you I can manage that part just fine. And no, he didn’t ask me.”

“You could ask him,” he said silkily.

Abby stood just as her nurse stepped to the door.

“Your next patient is in room three,” Margaret said, eyeing Greg with a puzzled air.
